New council homes on the way in Hamilton
Published: Friday 14 November 2025
Work is underway on 24 new council homes in Whitehill, Hamilton.
A total of 12 one-bedroom flats and 12 two-bedroom flats will be built on the site of the former St. Pauls Church on Backmuir Road.
The new homes are being constructed to accommodate a range of housing needs for the area, with designs and features suitable for older people and those with mobility issues, as well as a proportion for those with general needs.
The new homes are funded jointly by the council and Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme.
Chair of the council’s Housing and Technical Resources Committee, Councillor Davie McLachlan, was joined by council officials and representatives from the council’s contactor, The JR Group, to mark the start of work.
Councillor McLachlan said: “I’m delighted that we are continuing to make progress in improving the availability of high-quality social housing across South Lanarkshire.
“When complete, these flats will be a welcome addition to the council’s housing stock in this area”
“The important thing is that we are making a difference by providing more affordable social housing, of a variety that meets the needs of local people while maintaining affordability and value for money.”
Backmuir Road sits in the heart of its community and is closely linked to public transport, local schools and amenities.
Andrew Dallas, Projects Director for The JR Group said: “The Hamilton development at Backmuir Road is a vital step forward in delivering high quality affordable social homes on a brownfield site in South Lanarkshire. We appreciate the region, like the rest of the country, is facing a real housing crisis, and developments like this offer much needed housing and strong community investment.
“We are delighted to work with South Lanarkshire Council to deliver this development on their behalf and look forward to the successful completion of these new homes for those who need them.”
The homes are anticipated to be completed in early 2027, with work taking around 16 months to complete.
